Dear Loretta Walsh:

Thank you for finding a vein of humor in an otherwise venom filled debate by getting a resolution passed in the Wilmington city council calling for full personhood and rights for sperm.  It reminds me of the Monty Python sketch, “Every sperm is sacred.”  But how do you follow such an act?  Maybe I can help.

As you indicate, the field of fertility has elements that are mad to the point of … might I say “evil”?  But one must acknowledge that even if there is no excuse, there is an obvious cause.  For a generation the developed world has been unable to produce enough children for long term survival.  I think it makes people crazy.  Maybe if we could get the babies back, we could get our sanity back.

Humor often depends on insulting people, sympathizing with their prejudices.  But many prejudices are frowned upon.  None of my friends would tolerate me insulting somebody for their age, sex, ethnic group, education, religion, deformity or handicap.  But it is open season on marrying kin.  The prejudice against that is almost universal in our culture with no shred of shame attached.

Conveniently it turns out that the necessary and sufficient precondition for a healthy (heterosexual) couple to have normal fertility – enough on average for the society to survive – is to do just that.  Marry kin.  Here is a reference.  An Association between Kinship and Fertility of Human Couples Agnar Helgason et al. SCIENCE vol. 329 no. 5864 February 8, 2008 page 813 – 816.  Here is a link to a web site that has more evidence.

Searching through the whole site will produce more evidence than you could ever want.

Of course the purpose of the site is serious enough, but that need not inhibit you.  Poke enough fun at something and eventually the truth is going to emerge.  Truth is funny.

Best wishes.
